HOW PEARS IMPROVE HEALTH AND WEIGHT LOSS

Move over apples. According to new research, there’s another fruit that may compete with your “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” claim. The pear seems to be having a moment. And how convenient during December’s National Pear Month!

A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Food Sciences found a link between eating fresh pears regularly and healthier body weight. Researchers analyzed the diets of about 25,000 participants and found that those who regularly ate fresh pears weighed less than non-eaters, and were 35 percent less likely to be obese.

These results are not very surprising when we consider all about this fruit. Let’s take a look at the potential health benefits of eating pears, and why you should add them to your diet while it is fresh in the winter season.

Better appetite and hunger control. Pears are rich in fiber and water, which increase feelings of satiety and fullness for long periods of time. This fruit is only 100 calories, making it a perfect snack or dessert for any weight loss diet.

Lowers risk of diabetes. Fruits are often recommended as part of a diet to prevent diabetes. A study published in the British Medical Journal found that eating two servings of pears each week could lower the risk of diabetes by as much as 23 percent.

Helps your heart. Eating a heart-healthy diet is extremely important considering cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Pears contain the antioxidants glutathione and pectin, which have shown positive effects on lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Reduces inflammation. Chronic low-grade inflammation has been linked to serious diseases including obesity, heart disease, and certain types of cancers. Pears contain anti-inflammatory agents, called flavonoids, which studies have shown have a positive effect on inhibiting inflammation.

Now that we’ve entered the heart of the holiday season, it’s important that we remind ourselves of the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables. How lucky are we to have sweet and juicy pairs on our side in the battle of the bulge? We still love them apples, but pears, you’re tops on our list this month!
