NOW YOU CAN’T BLAME YOUR DNA FOR NOT LOSING WEIGHT

While it is true that some people have a genetic risk for having higher body weight, a new study has shown that DNA does not have any impact on anyone’s ability to lose weight. In short, when it comes to weight loss, everyone has an equal opportunity.

The comprehensive study was conducted by researchers at Newcastle University and published in the journal BMJ. It reviewed over 9000 people across eight studies and solidly concluded that genetics are not are not a factor in a person’s ability to lose weight. Even among people who carry what is known as the FTO gene, which increases the risk of being an extra 6.6 lbs. of body weight, there was no difference in the ability to achieve weight loss when implementing behaviors supporting weight reduction.

These findings should come as fantastic news for anyone who may have believed their genetics have doomed them for an overweight life. They should provide the encouragement that you DO have the ability and power to get healthy through weight loss. All you need to do is act.

If you’re not sure where to begin, usually the best place is to find out your health risks associated with your weight. This starts with calculating your body mass index (BMI)and, even better, getting a full read on your body composition (e.g., fat, muscle, and water percentages). Then have your health care provider interpret those results to provide a weight loss program personalized to your specific health and lifestyle needs.

We’re extremely encouraged by this new research and hope you are too. And pass the great news along to anyone who you think can use the boost!
