CAN YOU EAT HEALTHY ON A BUDGET?

CAN YOU EAT HEALTHY ON A BUDGET?

We’re all looking to save a dollar wherever we can, so did you know that you can actually save money shopping for higher quality food, which will support weight loss in both the short and long term?

A recent study published in the Journal of Hunger and Environmental Nutrition found that a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains was not only affordable but could save you $750 annually. Researchers compared a plant-based diet, shown to improve weight loss and reduce chronic disease risk factors, with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) MyPlate diet. After comparing both diets for a week, researchers found that the plant-based diet saved even more money than the lowest-cost MyPlate diet for eating healthy.

So what’s the secret to saving the big bucks? Simple: more greens and less meat. The study demonstrated that a person could eat a fairly high amount of fruits and vegetables daily without breaking the bank. Including meat, on the other hand, proved much more expensive and provided fewer health benefits.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this trend in the price of food. Multiple studies indicate that animal products are more than double the cost of a serving of fruit, vegetables, and legumes. Limiting meat consumption can improve both your finances and health. Studies have shown eating red and processed meats frequently has been linked to increased risk of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, cancer, and mortality.

Since protein builds muscle and contributes to long-term weight loss, isn’t there an opportunity cost to cutting out or back on meat? Not necessarily.. Some of the best protein superfoods are plant-based like quinoa, soy, lentils, beans, and chia seeds. By including some weekly meals that don’t include meat or seafood, you could save money and stay on weight loss track without experiencing any deficits in protein consumption.

The first step in your strategy to both lose weight and save at the market is to create a healthy meal plan using more plant-based foods. Most plant-based recipes are easy to follow, requiring little prep and cooking time. Once you have the plan, your grocery shopping list will fall right into place. The shopping list will help you stay focused and away from the aisles offering discounts on lower-quality foods. A simple audit of your typical shopping list can also show you where you’re currently spending the bulk of your money, as well as opportunities for adjustments.

It’s time we put this myth to rest and start changing the way we shop for food. There are plenty of nutritious options that can help you achieve both your weight loss and financial goals. Your body and wallet will thank you for it.
